The San Miguel Beermen dethroned the former champions, Ginebra Gin Kings, last Friday night. The Beermen started the 1st quarter like the house is on fire with the help of the Best Import awardee, Gabe Freeman, who scored and rebounded well especially in that quarter. Overall, he has 29 pts. to backed up his 22nd double-double performance of the season.
The Gin Kings made it near to a one-pt Beermen lead through the help of Helterbrand, but Pingris, Ildefonso, Pennisi, Cortez and Villanueva made it a big lead again to end the second quarter.
Since then, the Beermen never looked back and controlled the ball amidst of the 20,500+ crowds in the arena, ending the championship series in game 7. Defense set it all. Kings’ import, David Noel was held for a poor shooting performance of just 7 points and a game-high 9 turnovers. The Gin Kings, who had been one of the best 3-pt shooting team in the PBA league, had only made one trey since the 3rd and 4th quarter.
Villanueva was named as the Finals MVP, who also won the award for this season’s Most Improved Player. The Beermen, however, regained its crown after 4 years and became the only team with 18 championships.
