Help The Victims of Typhoon Ondoy

September 27, 2009

Please help the victims of typhoon Onday. Last night (Saturday, September 26, 2009), typhoon Ondoy rampaged in the Philippines. A large part of Luzon was damaged due to the rains and floods, especially in Cavite and Manila. NCR region and Region 4 areas were under the state of calamity. As of now, rescue operations are still on-going and there are still lots of people trapped on their rooftops, including Cainta, Rizal. This place was not unreachable since last night because the flood water is still up to the 2nd floor of their houses.

Rubber boats, life vests, foods and cash donations are needed.

For Ondoy Kapuso Hotline/Helpline:

NDCC, Abs-cbn hotlines and bank accounts for local and int’l cash donations will be posted as soon as I get the numbers and as soon as I get back online. (Just using my cel to connect to the internet, and saving battery life of course for emergency purposes)

Busy week

September 27, 2009

Busy week. Feels like 24 hours a day is not enough ‘coz there are alot more to do aside from blogging. Being a middle-class status with slow pc and no unlimited internet, it’s a good thing though, that I don’t intentionally blog the latest buzz (see the “About” page). Anyways — being “Do The Mix!”, here are what’s on my mind lately:

Ang Pinaka (Sept. 20, 2009) episode – missed it ‘coz I’m out there partying early. =-)

Team Pacquiao – Manny Pacquiao and Freddie Roach together with the their team now in Baguio City, Philippines for the start of Pacquiao’s training to prepare for the upcoming bout against Miguel Cotto.

Kanye West disrespecting Taylor Swift in the MTV’s VMA Awards – Kanye, Kanye. Honestly, I like Kanye’s music a lot than Taylor Swift. He is a genius in music, but what he had done to the 19-year old Taylor Swift was dumb. A lot of musicians expressed their reactions to the rapper/producer. I like how Beyonce showed real class when she gave her “speech time” to Taylor Swift after “B” won the Video Of The Year award. Kanye West, however, was kicked out of the venue and apologized to Swift for about 3 (or 4) times. Attitude aside, Kanye’s VMA move won’t affect my likeness to his music.

NBA Legends was impressed with PBA Legend Allan Caidic when the marksman scored a lot in the 2nd quarter in their game against the PBA Legends.

Chris Brown started his community service for beating up Rihanna in the pre-Grammy night.

Manny Pacquiao Day At San Diego Padres’ Petco Park; Rice is Pacquiao’s Secret

September 16, 2009

Before going back to the Philippines, Manny Pacquiao visited the fans in United States for one more time at Petco Park last Tuesday (September 15, 2009). Petco Park is the baseball stadium of San Diego Padres and it was announced that it was going to be “Manny Pacquiao day” as a treat for the fans and as a tribute to the current pound-for-pound king who are also named as this year’s ESPN’s Best Fighter awardee. Miguel Cotto was not in sight because he’s now starting his training to prepare for their fight in November 14 titled as “Firepower”. In these past few days, Pacquiao and Cotto started their promo tour in the New York Yankees Stadium and then went to different locations including San Francisco, Beverly Hills (in which Ron Artest of L.A. Lakers took a visit) and Puerto Rico (in which showed that even Puerto Ricans love Manny). In the press conference, trainer Freddie Roach answered Mayweather Sr.’s allegation that Pacquiao is using banned substances like steriods to keep his strength. Roach, however, said that they pulled Manny several times to examine but none of them were tested positive. Manny Pacquiao’s secret? “White rice,” Roach said. It’s no surprise for any Filipino. Rice is the Philippines’ main source of food which is a very good source of carbohydrates. Manny Pacquiao will now head back to the Philippines wherein he will train in Baguio.

Ron Artest, NBA Players And Even Puerto Ricans Love Pacquiao

September 15, 2009

As part of the promo tour in the upcoming Pacquiao-Cotto match, Manny Pacquiao went to Puerto Rico last September 11, 2009 from a 4-hour flight from New Jersey. Upon arriving in the El San Juan Hotel, Puerto Rican fans in the hostile territory swarmed Manny for autographs and some posed for pictures beside. It took even for a while for Manny to get to the elevator as he was busy signing, posing for pictures and greeting the fans. Manny arrived with his lawyer, Canadian adviser, training assistant and two Manila-based writers. Miguel Cotto took an earlier flight in the same day but went straight to his hometown in Caguas. Before going to Puerto Rico, Manny visited New York Times reporters. He and Cotto also visited San Francisco and just recently, went in the Beverly Hills, L.A. press conference. In that event, Ron Artest — a Pacquiao fan and now the newest member of the Los Angeles Lakers — took a visit and asked on stage for pictures. Manny even stood on top of a chair so he would not be the shortest guy in the photo to the delight of the press people.

It’s not the first time a player from the NBA went to visit Manny Pacquiao. In one of his previous fights, Kevin Garnett and the Boston Celtics visited Manny in the locker room. When Kobe Bryant visited the Philippines for the Nike Asia Tour, he said he is rooting for Manny and even said he would like to watch if his schedules allowed him. Robert Horry also said “He’s good, I’ve watched a couple of his fights. He is something special. I would love to see him spar and train, he’s such in great shape.” Horry went in Manila for a showdown between Kareem’s NBA Legends vs. the PBA Legends that took place last Sept. 11 (Friday).

One of the world’s hightest-paid athletes, Top Rank’s Bob Arum said that Manny Pacquiao has a guaranteed $13 millions against Cotto and could even go higher as much as $20 millions. The Pacquiao-Cotto match will take place in November 14 in Las Vegas, entitled “Firepower”. The promo tour kicked off last Sept. 10 (Thursday) in the Yankees Stadium.

UAAP 2009 Cheerdance Competition Winners; FEU New Champions

September 13, 2009

I was surfing the web when I turned on the t.v. to Studio 23 and it just so happened that Samsung‘s UAAP 2009 Cheerdance Competition was about to start. Don’t take me wrong, but I stopped web surfing right on to enjoy the whole show ‘coz, admit it — when you see these acrobats in action, you’ll be amazed. UAAP teams battled it out in the mat inside the full-packed Araneta Coliseum with universities like AdMU (Ateneo de Manila University), DLSU (De La Salle University), UP (University of the Philippines), UST (University of Sto. Tomas), NU (National University), UE (University of the East), FEU (Far Eastern University) and ADU (Adamson University).

Here are this year’s winners (held Sept. 13, 2009) of Samsung’s UAAP Cheerdance Competition:
2nd runner-up (with 90,000 pesos and a score of 83.1%) – UP Pep Squad
1st runner-up (with 140,000 pesos and a score of 83.4%) – Ateneo Blue Babble Battalion
Champion (with 225,000 pesos plus 35 Samsung cellphones and a score of 86.1%) – FEU Cheering Squad

UP proved to be a force in cheerdance when they took 2 back-to-back championships and hoped they could win their 3rd in a row, but failed. Fans from other schools were delighted when UP Pep Squad was announced as the 2nd runner-up, mainly because it means that there will be a new champion.

Aside from being last year’s UAAP basketball champs and this year’s number team (13-1), Ateneo, who are enjoying their 150th year, had another reason to celebrate when their Blue Babble Battalion was announced as the 1st runner-up. For years, they were knocking at the doors and never made it, until this year. Earlier, one of the Battalion’s dancer, Sari (forgot her surname ‘coz I kept looking at her beautiful face), was awarded as Samsung’s Shining Star.

And at last, a new champion was announced when the FEU Cheering Squad was called. FEU is this year’s host and number 2 in the basketball league. Just recently, they put up a tough fight against the defending champions Ateneo Blue Eagles.

Pacquiao-Cotto In Yankees Stadium

September 11, 2009

Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto went to the Yankees Stadium (New York) last Thursday (Friday in the Philippines) for press conference as a start of their first tour to promote their fight. Wearing a New York Yankees jersey, both fighters appeared in front to the media and in the 1,000-something fans gathered to support their bets. Manny Pacquiao, the current pound-for-pound king and ESPN’s Best Fighter awardee, holds a 49 wins, 3 losses, 2 draws with 37 KOs. Pacquiao’s previous achievement was when he beat Oscar “The Golden Boy” de La Hoya and when he took down Ricky Hatton in 2nd round. Miguel Cotto, who also holds a title under the belt, has a 34 wins and 1 loss with 27 KOs. This is an impressive record but if Pacquiao win, Pacquiao will have his 7th title and the first in boxing history. Before the tour, Pacquiao and Cotto agreed upon a 65/35 shares, with Manny taking the 65%. It was reported that Cotto already started training while Pacquiao will about to start training first in Baquio, Philippines (as said in this post) before continuing in Wild Card Gym. Lonn Trost, the Yankees’ chief operating officer, wanted boxing back in the Yankees stadium. He said he wanted the stadium to hold the fight to the winner of Pacquiao vs. Cotto and the winner of Floyd Mayweather vs. Juan Manuel Marquez match. Mayweather-Marquez fight is on Sept. 19 while the Pacquiao-Cotto fight is on Nov. 14, both will take place in Las Vegas.
